PM Modi Doctor’s Day Tribute: India celebrates National Doctor’s Day each year on July 1st to honor the dedication, contributions, and healing potential of the entire medical fraternity. It is a day to recognize contributions, competence, a path of skill and followup effulgence, as well as the heart and guts behind their decisions. Courage, guts, and compassion are core fundamentals of any healthcare system, and this is true today while residents and citizens promote a moment of silence today for a reason.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also celebrated the spirit of National Doctor’s Day and took the time to thankful opportunities extending beyond formal settings to grateful intentions to acknowledge doctors for their role in India’s path for a healthier future.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted:
“Wishing all diligent physicians on #DoctorsDay. Our doctors have carved out a niche for their expertise and diligence. No less remarkable is their ethos of compassion. They are true guardians of health and pillars of humanity. Their effort towards making India’s healthcare more robust is simply beyond words.”
This statement captures the country’s profound admiration for physicians who work without remuneration, at times under conditions beyond imagination and with ceaseless persistence.
To celebrate this milestone, below are five Indian medical legends who have received the Padma Awards for outstanding medical contribution:
1. Dr. Devi Prasad Shetty – Padma Bhushan (2012)
One of India’s top cardiac surgeons and pioneers of cheap heart operations, Dr. Shetty established Narayana Health and revolutionized the face of cardiac treatment in India.
2. Dr. M. R. Rajagopal – Padma Shri (2018)
Popularly referred to as India’s father of palliative care, Dr. Rajagopal has toiled day and night to introduce humane end-of-life care practices.
3. Dr. S. S. Badrinath – Padma Bhushan (1996)
A veteran eye surgeon and entrepreneur, Dr. Badrinath transformed India’s eye care with path-breaking technology and mass accessibility.
4. Dr. K. K. Aggarwal – Padma Shri (2010)
One of India’s top cardiologists and public health experts, Dr. Aggarwal taught millions of individuals through his preventive healthcare work.
5. Dr. N. H. Antia – Padma Shri (1990)
Surgeon and rural healthcare pathfinder, the efforts of Dr. Antia provided the push to the availability of medical services in unassuming regions.
