Kodikonda Sira National Highway: The Union government has approved the upgradation of National Highway 544E into a four-lane highway. This stretch runs from Kodikonda to Sira in Andhra Pradesh’s Anantapur district. Authorities have begun preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR) to move the development forward.
To handle future traffic volumes, the highway will be widened to 24 meters. Officials confirmed that enough land is already available between Kodikonda and Madakasira. However, they will need to acquire additional land for the Madakasira to Sira stretch. The Centre has formally instructed the concerned departments to begin work on the DPR. This marks a key step in improving infrastructure and boosting connectivity in southern Andhra Pradesh.
In a significant boost to infrastructure in Andhra Pradesh, the Centre has approved the expansion of National Highway 544E, which connects Kodikonda and Sira in Anantapur district. Currently, the highway is a two-lane stretch, but it will now be upgraded to a four-lane road to accommodate future traffic growth and improve regional connectivity.
As part of this initiative, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has directed officials to prepare detailed project proposals for the expansion. Accordingly, the upgraded highway will span a width of 24 meters and include a 4-meter central divider to enhance safety and traffic flow. Looking ahead, authorities expect the project to play a key role in the development of the region, easing transportation and promoting economic activity along the corridor.

Kodikonda Sira National Highway Key Connector:
Constructed in 2016–17 at a cost of ₹1,000 crore, the 99-kilometre-long Kodikonda–Sira stretch of National Highway 544E runs through Andhra Pradesh’s Anantapur district. It has emerged as a crucial link in South India’s road infrastructure. This highway connects two major national corridors, Bengaluru–Pune National Highway 48 and Kashmir–Kanyakumari National Highway 44. The route significantly boosts regional and interstate connectivity.
Officials highlight that this highway offers faster access for vehicles travelling from Anantapur and Tadipatri to Mangaluru Port, Pune, and Mumbai. This makes it a vital transport corridor for freight and long-distance travel. According to National Highway Authority standards, the road must be 24 meters wide. Of this, 20 meters will form the main carriageway. A 4-meter-wide central divider will ensure better traffic management and safety.
Land Acquisition Cleared for NH-544E Expansion:
Officials confirmed that they already have sufficient land to expand the Kodikonda–Madakasira stretch of National Highway 544E into four lanes. During the highway’s earlier development into a two-lane road, authorities proactively acquired the required land to avoid future complications.
However, for the Madakasira, Sira segment, officials acknowledged the need to acquire additional land to facilitate the planned widening. Responding to this, the Centre approved the upgrade of the existing two-lane highway into a four-lane corridor. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways instructed the concerned departments to prepare and submit a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed expansion. Officials have already started the process and plan to forward the DPR to the Centre once completed.
