Thyroid Symptoms: The thyroid sits in the neck and resembles a butterfly. This small gland controls the body’s metabolism by releasing important hormones. When the thyroid stops working properly, it leads to several health problems. Women face a higher risk of thyroid issues than men. Doctors mainly identify two types of thyroid disorders: hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) and hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid). Each condition shows different symptoms, and recognizing them early helps doctors start treatment quickly.


Symptoms of Hypothyroidism (Underactive Thyroid):

When the thyroid slows down, the body’s processes also slow down. Common symptoms in females include:


  • Fatigue: Women feel tired even after sleeping well.
  • Weight gain: Most people can see weight gain without changes in diet or exercise.
  • Cold sensitivity: It is said that people who feel cold even when others are comfortable might be having high chances of having thyroid.
  • Dry skin and hair: People who are feeling of having thyroid can see their skin becoming rough, and hair might thin or fall out.
  • Irregular periods: It is said that Periods might become heavier or more frequent.
  • Depression: If you are having Mood swings and low energy are common there might be high chances of having thyroid.
  • Constipation: Slowed digestion can cause bowel problems.
  • Memory issues: Difficulty concentrating or remembering things.

Symptoms of Hyperthyroidism (Overactive Thyroid):

In this instance, the thyroid overproduces hormones, which causes the body to function more quickly. Among the symptoms are:

  • Fast heartbeat: The heart may race or feel like it’s pounding.
  • Anxiety or irritability: Mood swings or nervousness appear more often.
  • Heat sensitivity: Feeling hot and sweating more than usual.
  • Irregular periods: Menstrual cycles may become lighter or stop altogether.
  • Trouble sleeping: Restlessness and insomnia are common.
  • Muscle weakness: Especially in the arms and legs.

Women should see a doctor and get a basic blood test to measure thyroid hormone levels if they observe any of these symptoms. Thyroid disorders can be successfully treated with early detection and appropriate care.
