How to Escape From a Burning Bus: Step-by-Step Safety Guide

Bus Fire Escape Guide: Sleeper and luxury buses these days are very high, and their emergency exits are often too high for many passengers to reach easily. Jumping from such a height can result in broken legs or arms, and in chaotic situations, people may fall over each other, increasing the risk of injury or death. Most buses lack ladders near exits, and the narrow aisles make moving during an emergency even harder.

Unlike airplanes, buses don’t give safety instructions or announcements. Countries like Japan and China are ahead in passenger safety, but in India, these precautions are often missing. Knowing how to act quickly can save lives.

Step-by-Step Guide to Escape a Bus Fire:

1. Stay Low and Cover Your Mouth

  • Usually the smoke rises upwards, so it is advised to stay look and try to crawl on the floor while escaping from the bus.
  • The best way to breathe properly during this time is to tie a cloth or handkerchief to your nose or mouth. This can help you breathe easily.

2. Find the Nearest Exit FAST

Look for:

  • Main doors (front or middle)
  • Emergency exits (marked with red handles or signs)
  • Windows with red hammers
  • Don’t wait for others; go to the closest exit.

3. Open the Emergency Exit:

  • Push the red bar or pull the handle.
  • If stuck, kick the door or break the window using the emergency hammer.
  • Jump out carefully; getting out safely is more important than the height.

4. Help Others If You Can (Without Delaying Yourself):

  • Assist kids, the elderly, or the injured nearby.
  • Never go back inside once you’re out.

5. Move Far Away from the Bus:

  • Run at least 50 meters (150 feet) away.
  • Stay behind walls or trees if possible; buses can explode due to fuel or gas.

6. Call for Help:

  • Dial local emergency numbers (100, 101, 112, or 911).
  • Give clear information: “Bus on fire at (location)”.

What NOT to Do:

  • Don’t stand in smoke, you may inhale poisonous gas.
  • Don’t use elevators on doubledecker buses.
  • Don’t stop to collect bags or phones.

Quick Tip:

Immediately when you board a bus, try to notice exits, emergency doors, and also red hammers. This information if you analyze right after you board, you’ll have an idea how to escape if there is any problem. Don’t forget to stay calm, move fast, get low, and get out. You can survive.
