Is Telangana Setting the Pace? India’s 10-Hour Workday Revolution Begins!

Telangana’s Big Step Toward Flexibility

Telangana has approved a major change in labor rules. Commercial establishments can now extend daily work hours from eight to ten. This does not apply to shops but covers other business sectors. The aim is to give businesses more freedom while protecting workers with clear limits.


Under the policy, total weekly work cannot exceed 48 hours. Any time beyond that qualifies as overtime and must be paid accordingly. A 30-minute break is required if an employee works over six hours in a day. No one can work more than 12 hours in a single day, even with overtime. Overtime is capped at 144 hours per quarter.

Other Indian States Are Watching Telangana

Telangana isn’t alone in rethinking work hours. Gujarat and Karnataka have already introduced similar flexible work models. Industries like IT and manufacturing are driving this shift. They need more agility to compete globally, and states are responding.


However, these changes come with safeguards. Worker health, rest breaks, and fair pay remain non-negotiable. Flexibility doesn’t mean exploitation.

Global Work Cultures Show Mixed Results

Globally, long workdays are common in places like Japan and the U.S. These countries often face criticism for burnout and declining productivity. In contrast, Scandinavian nations focus on fewer hours and better balance. They show that less can sometimes mean more.

Telangana’s move adds an Indian voice to this global debate. It reflects the country’s need to grow while protecting worker rights.

India Inc. Splits Over Work Hours

The debate over work duration is heating up. Narayana Murthy’s 70-hour suggestion and SN Subrahmanyan’s 90-hour call both faced strong public backlash. Many saw these comments as tone-deaf.

Meanwhile, Anand Mahindra emphasized that quality matters more than quantity. His view gained support among those prioritizing work-life balance.

Telangana Could Be Setting the Standard

Telangana’s policy might inspire a national shift. More states could adopt longer workdays with similar protections. But this path requires constant review. Business growth must not come at the cost of employee wellbeing.

For now, Telangana leads and the rest of India is paying close attention.
