Bharat Bandh Today: Will Schools, Banks and Power Services Be Affected?

Bharat Bandh Today:

On July 9, 2025, over 25 crore workers across India have called for a nationwide strike, known as the Bharat Bandh. A coalition of trade unions has organized the strike to protest against government policies they believe are anti-worker and pro-corporate. Here’s everything you need to know about the Bharat Bandh, its impact, and the sectors likely to face disruptions.

Bharat Bandh Today:

The Bharat Bandh is a nationwide protest against the government’s economic policies, particularly those that allegedly lead to increased privatization, rising unemployment, and inflation. A joint forum of 10 central trade unions is leading the strike. Workers from various sectors, including banking, insurance, postal services, and coal mining, plan to participate in the strike and may disrupt regular services.

Banking Services

Although the government has not declared an official holiday for the banking sector, the strike may affect services as employees from different unions have joined the protest. Banking operations may face delays, and some branches could remain closed for the day, especially in regions with significant union presence.

Schools and Educational Institutions

Schools and colleges plan to remain open on July 9, as authorities have not announced any official closure due to the Bharat Bandh. However, some teacher unions might participate in protests, which could cause minor disruptions.

Railway and Transport

While the railway services will continue as scheduled, train delays may occur if transport sector workers join the strike. It is advisable to check train schedules before traveling.

Power Supply

Over 27 lakh workers from the power sector are participating in the strike. This may cause temporary disruptions in electricity supply and affect services such as power maintenance and customer service complaints.

Why is this Strike Happening?

The unions have expressed their dissatisfaction with the government’s failure to hold a labour conference for the past decade and have raised concerns over rising unemployment, particularly among youth aged 20-25 years. The Bharat Bandh is seen as a way to raise awareness and pressure the government to take action on these issues.

The Bharat Bandh on July 9 will likely cause disruptions in essential services, including banking, transport, and electricity supply. While schools and colleges plan to function normally, some public services might face disruptions.
