IIM Kolkata: A student was allegedly raped by another student inside the boys’ hostel of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Joka in Kolkata. The accused has already been arrested based on the complaint filed by the victim. According to police sources, the accused is a second-year management student at this central government institution.
This disturbing case comes close on the heels of the recent rape incident at South Calcutta Law College in Kasbar. Just days after that case came to light, rape allegations have now emerged from another prestigious institution in Kolkata, raising serious concerns.
As per the complaint, the victim, who is also a student of IIM Joka, was called to the boys’ hostel by the accused under the pretext of a counseling session. Once there, she was allegedly offered some food and drinks. The victim claimed that after consuming them, she lost consciousness. When she regained her senses, she found herself lying inside the boys’ hostel room and alleged that she had been raped while unconscious.
Initially, the victim approached Thakurpukur police station to file her complaint. However, since IIM Joka falls under the jurisdiction of Haridevpur police station, the police there guided her accordingly. With their help, she lodged a formal complaint at Haridevpur on Friday. Following this, the police visited the hostel, collected evidence, and arrested the accused student.
According to police sources, the victim also alleged that she wasn’t even allowed to sign the hostel’s visitor book upon entry. She was then served pizza and water, which she believes were laced with some intoxicating substance. After eating, she lost consciousness. She further alleged that the accused raped her and even beat her when she tried to resist.
This incident comes at a time when the state is still grappling with the aftermath of the Kasbar law college rape case that took place on June 25. That case only came to light on June 27 when the victim reported that she was first taken to the union room, where an attempt was made to rape her, and then to the guard’s room, where the crime was committed. The guard reportedly stood outside during the incident.
In the Kasbar case, police initially arrested three individuals, one an ex-student and two current students. The college guard on duty that day was also arrested later. The Kolkata Police Intelligence Department along with the SIT are still probing that case.
Now, with this fresh allegation from IIM Joka, concerns about student safety in Kolkata’s educational institutions have deepened. The police are continuing their investigations to ensure justice is served in both these high-profile cases.
