OTT Streaming Services Cancellation Process To Get More Complex

OTT Streaming Services Cancellation Process To Get More Complex

Streaming services cancellation:

For years, one of the best features of streaming services like Netflix, Prime Video, and Disney Plus was the ease with which users could cancel their subscriptions. With a few clicks, subscribers could unsubscribe without facing long waiting times or endless phone calls. However, a recent ruling by a U.S. federal appeals court may change that.

Streaming services cancellation:

The court struck down a proposed rule by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) known as the “click to cancel rule.” This rule aimed to make the cancellation process as simple as subscribing, allowing users to stop their subscriptions with just a few clicks. It would also have required clearer terms on free trials and promotional pricing. The rule, which was set to go into effect on July 14, 2025, would have been a win for consumers. Unfortunately, the court ruled that the FTC hadn’t performed the required economic analysis, preventing the rule from being enforced.

Without such regulations, streaming services may start complicating the cancellation process. Companies could hide the cancellation option deeper in the settings or require multiple steps to cancel. Some services have already begun making it more difficult to unsubscribe. For instance, Amazon Prime Video’s cancellation process previously involved navigating through four pages and clicking through multiple decisions, prompting a lawsuit by the FTC, which is still ongoing.

For Indian users, the impact may be indirect. While this ruling is specific to the U.S., global streaming companies often adopt similar policies across different markets. In India, while cancellation remains simple, it’s possible that these changes could be mirrored here. With rising streaming costs, consumers need flexibility in managing their subscriptions. If these changes spread globally, users may soon face more challenges when trying to cancel services they no longer use.

For now, it remains important to stay informed and continue monitoring any adjustments in streaming policies.
