San Rechal, 26, died by suicide in Puducherry on Sunday. She starred as a model and spoke out against colourism. She wore the Miss Puducherry crown in 2022. She inspired many. But she struggled in silence.


She consumed pills at home. She rushed to a government hospital. Then, doctors moved her to a private hospital. Finally, she reached JIPMER, where she passed away.

A Fractured Family and Financial Stress

Rechal married recently. She faced serious financial pressure. She pawned and sold her jewellery to fund her career. She sought help from her father. He said he had responsibilities toward his son. That refusal crushed her hopes.


Police found a suicide note in her home. She wrote that no one should blame themselves. She took her own life. Officials suspect marital issues also played a role. A tehsildar-level inquiry is now underway.

Rechal gained fame for challenging colour bias in fashion and film. She often spoke against discrimination of darker-skinned individuals. She stood up for inclusivity. She used her platform to raise awareness. In 2022, she won the Miss Puducherry crown.
