London Plane Crash 2025: Fuel Cutoff? What Investigators Are Exploring

London Plane Crash 2025: The recent crash of Air India flight AI171 on its way to London from Ahmedabad has left the aviation industry and civilians jittery. As investigations are underway into the tragedy that claimed over 270 lives, preliminary findings suggest cockpit confusion, possible mechanical failure, and safety shortcomings may have contributed.

Loss of Power

Engine power ceased suddenly. Those were the claims from the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau of India (AAIB), that both engines lost thrust shortly after take-off. It was found by preliminary flight data analysis that fuel control switches for both engines were moved to the “cutoff” position to stop fuel flow mid-air. After some time in the cutoff position, the switches were moved to ‘run’; nevertheless, fuel wasn’t available to develop sufficient thrust for the aircraft to sustain flight.

Human Error Agonizes

Although the cockpit voice recordings reveal that uncertainty existed among the flight crew concerning who activated the fuel cutoff switches, there is much debate among experts about how likely it would have been for such activation to be accidental. Questions are surrounding the pilots’ decision-making, cockpit coordination, or even intent. For forensic purposes, the authorities are examining the pilot’s medical and psychological background, which reportedly includes having mental health issues.

Devious Engineering and Design

There are also concerns over the design and safety of the fuel cutoff switches. A 2018 service bulletin issued by Boeing raised awareness of the issue of switch lock. But because the correct fix was never made mandatory, this has drawn criticism. Although Boeing and the FAA continue to maintain the system is safe, the crash has opened a new chapter of debate on oversight and accountability.

Intent Not Ruled Out

Another angle for investigators to explore would be the possibility of intentional sabotage. They are currently reviewing evidence, including CCTV recordings, aircraft servicing records, and fuel quality data, to eliminate potential deliberate tampering.

A Convoluted Puzzle That the Whole World Is Watching

With the US and UK aviation authorities joining India’s AAIB in the investigation. The whole world waits for some clear answers. Whether this human error gloom or mechanical failure, or something more sinister. This tragic accident-solidifies the necessity of immediate cockpit protocol tightening and scrutiny over aircraft safety.
