Veteran Actress B Saroja Devi Passes: Kota Srinivasa Rao recently passed away, and just days later, another cinematic legend, B. Saroja Devi, passed away at the age of 87. The legendary actress breathed her last on Monday morning in Bangalore, known for her graceful performances across several languages.


A Quiet Struggle with Age

Saroja Devi had been unwell with age-related ailments and was under treatment in a private hospital in Bangalore. It was reported that she died peacefully around 9 a,m. This adds another miserable day into the present for Indian cinema, still recovering from the loss of Kota Srinivasa Rao.

A Seven-Decade Journey into Cinema

B. Saroja Devi’s cinematic career began in 1955 with the film ‘Mahakavi Kalidasu,’ after which she was born in 1938 in Bangalore. The film was a commercial success, paving the way for a phenomenal career. She shot to fame as well in Telugu with ‘Panduranga Mahatyam’ and went on to become a household name across all south Indian film industries and Hindi cinema.


About 200 Films And A Timeless Legacy

In her career spanning across 70 years, starting with Mahakavi Kalidasu in 1955, Saroja Devi worked in close to 200 films and shared screen space with legends while playing roles that are iconic even today. Her performances were marked with grace and pathos with unmatched screen presence.

Personal Sadness and an Exit with Dignity

After her husband’s death in 1986 while shooting Ladies Hostel, she maintained a five-year break from films. Of course, she made sporadic appearances thereafter, but for the most part, she withdrew from public life.

A week later, as the industry remembers Kota Srinivasa Rao, the demise of B. Saroja Devi feels even heavier. Two stalwarts in and out of the industry, but never forgotten.
