24 Hours to Execution, But Nimisha Priya Survives – Here’s the Full Story

Who Is Nimisha Priya and Why She Landed on Death Row

Nimisha Priya is a nurse from Kerala who moved to Yemen in 2008. She wanted to earn a better living to support her family back home. After working in hospitals, she opened her own clinic in Sanaa, Yemen’s capital. Local laws required her to partner with a Yemeni national. That man was Talal Abdo Mahdi.

He took her passport, stole her money, and allegedly abused her. In 2017, Nimisha injected him with a sedative to get back her passport. He died. She tried to flee Yemen but got caught. The courts convicted her of murder. Since 2020, she has been on death row.

How the Clock Almost Ran Out

Her execution was scheduled for July 16, 2025. With just 24 hours left, Indian officials, activists, and religious leaders rushed to act. They contacted the victim’s family, pleaded with Yemen’s authorities, and raised international attention. India doesn’t have official ties with the Houthis, who control Sanaa. That made the case even harder to manage.

Yemen follows Islamic law. The only option left was diyah, or blood money financial compensation offered to the victim’s family in exchange for pardon. The Save Nimisha campaign collected close to Rs 8 crore (about $1 million) to pay them. That payment secured a delay but not her release.

Nimisha Priya ‘s – Family Holds the Key

The victim’s relatives agreed to postpone the execution for now. But they have not accepted the money yet. If they do, Nimisha could walk free. If they refuse, the death sentence could return. Her future rests entirely on their decision.

The Indian government says it’s done all it can. Lawyers, religious mediators, and civil rights groups are doing the rest. For Nimisha, the next few days are still full of danger.

More Than One Life at Stake

Her case shows how vulnerable migrant workers can be, especially in conflict zones. She tried to survive, and now she may die for it. The story also reveals how international diplomacy often fails when politics, religion, and war collide.

Nimisha Priya is not just a convict. She is a woman caught in a nightmare one that may still end with justice or tragedy.
