After three decades in Bollywood, Suniel Shetty is making a heartfelt debut, this time in Tulu cinema. The actor recently shot a special cameo in Jai, a political thriller directed by Roopesh Shetty. Though his appearance is brief, Suniel calls it one of his most meaningful roles yet.
In Jai, Suniel plays himself. His cameo features a powerful moment where he speaks about his love for Karnataka. “I owe a lot to both my karmabhoomi and janmabhoomi,” he says, referring to Mumbai and Tulunad.
Suniel Shetty didn’t charge a single rupee for his role. He made that choice with purpose. “It’s not a big deal,” he says. “I did it to promote my region and culture.”
The actor hails from Mulki, a small town near Mangaluru. His passion for the Tulu language and Tulunad culture runs deep. “I want people to know about Tulunad. It’s one of the most beautiful coastal regions, with a high literacy rate. I want Tulu to be officially recognised,” he adds.
This act isn’t about fame or goodwill. For Suniel, it’s about identity. He wants the world to discover a part of India that rarely gets national attention.
Beyond cinema, Suniel Shetty is making waves as an entrepreneur. Last week, he received the Changemaker of the Year Award 2025, presented by Google for Education and Viksit Bharat. The award celebrates his journey from actor to business leader.
The actor now chairs a national entrepreneurship council. His goal? To help build a generation of one million Indian founders. “Awards come and go. What matters is being able to give back,” he says.
