Once a popular Bollywood star, Mamta Kulkarni’s life took an unexpected turn in 2025. At the Mahakumbh Mela, she appeared in an orange kurta and saffron scarf, stepping into the religious spotlight as Mahamandaleshwar of the Kinnar Akhada. The appointment came from Acharya Mahamandaleshwar Laxmi Narayan Tripathi and was accompanied by a new name Shree Yamai Mamta Nand Giri.
Now, a fresh video has triggered another social media storm. In it, Mamta stands in a blessing pose under a ceremonial umbrella during a procession. Laxmi Narayan quickly gestures at her to lower her hand. Mamta follows the cue without resistance. This brief moment has reopened questions around her role, her authority, and her spiritual transformation.
The backlash had started immediately after her appointment. Critics pointed to her past controversies including her alleged link to an international drug case in 2016 and claimed she lacked the spiritual grounding required for such a title. On January 31, Rishi Ajay Das, founder of the Kinnar Akhada, expelled both Mamta and Laxmi Narayan from the Akhada. He claimed that the appointment had been made without proper consultation.
Mamta soon announced her resignation, citing hurt and conflict. However, just days later, she re-entered the fold. She declared her guru had not accepted her resignation and reaffirmed her commitment to the Akhada and Sanatan Dharma.
