Kasparov: “Now We Can Question Magnus’ Domination”

Former world champion Garry Kasparov has raised doubts about Magnus Carlsen’s dominance in world chess after D Gukesh defeated him again. “This is not just his second loss to Gukesh, it’s a convincing loss,” Kasparov said during commentary at the Grand Chess Tour in Zagreb. “It’s not a miracle or that Gukesh benefited from terrible mistakes. It was a real fight. And Magnus lost.”

Gukesh Defeats Carlsen in Rapid Format

Gukesh, playing with the white pieces, beat Carlsen in the sixth round of the rapid section. The win comes just weeks after he defeated him in classical chess at Norway Chess. Gukesh now sits alone at the top of the Zagreb standings with 10 points.

The Indian teenager had a shaky start, losing in the first round to Jan-Krzysztof Duda. But he rebounded strongly, defeating Alireza Firouzja, R Praggnanandhaa, Nodirbek Abdusattorov, Fabiano Caruana, and Carlsen in consecutive rounds.

Carlsen’s Comments Backfire

Before the tournament, Carlsen questioned Gukesh’s ability in faster time formats. “It remains to be proven that he is one of the best players in such a format,” he had said. His performance has since proved him wrong.

Kasparov also noted the mental strength Gukesh displayed. “His resilience reminds me of computers,” he said. “Carlsen came looking for revenge after Norway Chess and that’s never a good mindset.”

Eyes On Overall Title

With 21 blitz rounds still to be played, Gukesh has already made a major impact. At just 18, he has now beaten Carlsen twice in two different formats, and on both occasions, without relying on errors. His rise continues and the chess world is watching closely.
