Can Perplexity’s Comet Browser Overtake Chrome on Mobile?

Perplexity AI is challenging Google Chrome’s long-held dominance in mobile browsing with its new AI-powered browser, Comet. With Google facing antitrust scrutiny, this might be the perfect time for a new player to disrupt the browser market, and Comet is designed to do just that. But can it really replace Chrome?

AI-Powered Browsing: The Next Frontier

Most people use generative AI through chatbots like ChatGPT, but web browsers are emerging as the next big platform for AI interactions. Recently, The Browser Company launched Dia, an AI-driven web browser that integrates an AI assistant for a smarter browsing experience. Perplexity’s Comet takes this to the next level, blending AI with traditional browsing features to create an intelligent, task-oriented platform.

Comet: More Than Just a Browser

Comet is not just another browser; it is an AI assistant that handles tasks like scheduling meetings, summarizing web pages, and managing emails. Built on the Chromium framework, it retains the features of traditional browsers but adds an AI layer that automates routine tasks. Users can access their emails, calendar events, and browsing history, making their browsing experience far more efficient and interactive.

Currently in beta on desktop, Perplexity AI plans to expand the browser’s reach by next year. The company is in talks with smartphone manufacturers to pre-install Comet, challenging mobile browser giants Chrome and Safari, which currently dominate more than 90% of the market.

Perplexity’s push to pre-install Comet is part of a broader strategy to embed AI into the everyday mobile experience. A partnership with Motorola to pre-install the AI on devices demonstrates the company’s serious commitment. Comet’s AI integration could reshape how users interact with the internet, making browsing smarter and more task-oriented.

Is Comet the Future of Browsing?

Perplexity’s plan to make Comet the default browser on mobile devices could be a game-changer. If it succeeds, AI could soon be an inseparable part of the browsing experience, replacing the need for multiple apps and tabs.
