Sundar Pichai Joins Billionaire Club:
Sundar Pichai has become a billionaire after serving as the CEO of Alphabet for ten years. He is now worth \$1.1 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. Alphabet which is the parent company of Google has increased its market value by over \$1 trillion since 2023. This growth gave investors 120% returns. Sundar Pichai’s rise to wealth is especially rare. Non founder CEOs in the tech industry do not usually become billionaires.
Other tech CEOs, like Mark Zuckerberg of Meta and Jensen Huang of Nvidia, became billionaires due to owning stakes in their companies. Pichai does not have such ownership yet he has achieved this milestone. He has been Alphabet’s CEO for 10 years making him the longest serving CEO of the company.
In August, Pichai shared an earnings update on social media. He mentioned the significant growth in Alphabet’s new businesses, including Cloud, YouTube, Play and Subscriptions. In 2015, Alphabet’s total revenue was $75 billion. By 2024, YouTube and Cloud alone had a combined revenue of $110 billion. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk praised Pichai for his success. Pichai responded with a simple folded hands emoji.
Sundar Pichai was born in Tamil Nadu, India, to a middle-class family. He grew up in a small two-room apartment. In 1993, he won a scholarship to study at Stanford University. Pichai joined Google in 2004. Over the years, he rose through the ranks of the company. He played a key role in leading Google’s Android division and in developing the Chrome browser. In 2015, Pichai became the CEO of Alphabet.
Sundar Pichai holds a small stake in Alphabet, just 0.02%. This stake is worth around $440 million. Most of his wealth is in cash. However, the co-founders of Alphabet, Larry Page and Sergey Brin have much larger fortunes. Larry Page is worth $171.2 billion and Sergey Brin is worth $160.4 billion. Both are among the world’s richest people.
