India celebrated in unison as Divya Deshmukh scripted chess history by defeating Koneru Humpy to win the 2025 FIDE Women’s World Cup. Among the first to respond were Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indian chess legend Viswanathan Anand.
The emotional finale, held in Batumi, Georgia, ended with 19-year-old Divya sealing the title after a thrilling rapid tiebreak. Her win triggered waves of congratulatory messages across the country.
Taking to social media, PM Modi praised both players and hailed the historic final. “A historic final featuring two outstanding Indian chess players!” he wrote. “Proud of the young Divya Deshmukh on becoming FIDE Women’s World Chess Champion 2025. Congratulations for this remarkable feat.”
He also lauded Humpy for her grit and determination, saying her performance inspired millions.
Five-time World Champion Viswanathan Anand called the final an “amazing battle of nerves.” Commenting during the match, Anand noted that Humpy’s collapse in the endgame was “totally self-inflicted” and pointed out how nerves can unravel even seasoned players.
After the match, he tweeted: “Congratulations to @Divyadeshmukh05… Becoming GM and a spot in the Candidates. @humpy_koneru played a very good event. A great celebration of Indian chess.”
Divya, overwhelmed by the moment, broke down after her win and hugged her mother. “I need time to process this,” she admitted during the post-match interview. The tournament not only gave her the title but also her long-awaited Grandmaster designation.
With the nation’s top leaders and chess icons backing her, Divya Deshmukh’s win marks a new chapter for Indian women’s chess.
