Nimisha Priya Death Sentence: Cancelled or Not? Conflicting Claims Raise Questions

Nimisha Priya Death Sentence: Cancelled or Not? Conflicting Claims Raise Questions

Confusion Grows Over Nimisha Priya’s Execution: What Is the Truth?

Two conflicting claims have emerged over the fate of Kerala nurse Nimisha Priya, sentenced to death in Yemen. While the Grand Mufti of India announced that her death sentence had been officially cancelled, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) says otherwise.

On Monday, the office of Grand Mufti Kanthapuram AP Abubakar Musliyar released a statement saying a high-level meeting in Sanaa had decided to “completely cancel” the death sentence. The execution, which had been temporarily suspended, was claimed to be officially revoked.

However, on Tuesday, MEA sources refuted the claim. “Information being shared by certain individuals on the Nimisha Priya case is inaccurate,” officials told India Today. According to the government, no official communication has been received from the Yemeni authorities confirming any cancellation.

The Grand Mufti’s office later admitted it had not yet received written confirmation from Yemen but maintained that verbal assurances were given during diplomatic engagement in Sanaa.

Nimisha Priya Case Background: A Fatal Dispute

Nimisha Priya, 38, from Kerala’s Palakkad district, moved to Yemen in 2008 as a nurse. She later went into business with a Yemeni national, Talal Abdo Mahdi. Their relationship deteriorated amid allegations of harassment and passport seizure by Mahdi.

In 2017, Priya reportedly attempted to sedate Mahdi to retrieve her documents. He died of a suspected overdose. She was arrested and sentenced to death in 2020.

Execution Halted, Not Cancelled Yet?

The execution was scheduled for July 16, 2025, but was halted following last-minute appeals by the Grand Mufti and Indian diplomats. Both Yemeni President Rashad al-Alimi and Houthi leader Mahdi al-Mashat had earlier approved the execution.

Despite international pressure, the official status of her sentence remains unclear.

No Written Confirmation from Yemen

The MEA has reiterated that until official documentation is received from Yemen, Priya’s sentence stands. The Grand Mufti’s office maintains hope, but the government is urging caution. With two opposing narratives, the central question remains: Has Nimisha Priya’s death sentence really been cancelled, or is this another diplomatic delay? As of now, there is no definitive answer.
