A tremendous 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the Pacific Coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula. The earthquake resulted in tsunami waves that eventually struck Japan’s Hokkaido island. Several coastal areas saw tsunami waves, reaching 4 meters in height. Around 2 million people went to evacuate on beaches and in low climate towns.
Japanese manga artist Ryo Tatsuki has been gaining renewed attention. In 1999, Tatsuki published a manga series named The Future I Saw. Tatsuki included a series of dream-based predictions about things happening around the world. Tatsuki has since been dubbed the “Japanese Baba Vanga” by fans.
In one of her visions, she describes a massive crack beneath the ocean, located near Japan. She mentioned the tsunami would “eat up” even more area than the tsunami in 2011. Many believe that her warning (July 2025) might be coming true months early.
After the tsunami, there were online reactions to the possible prediction. Social media exploded with users, declaring that her predictions were “close enough” to reality. Social media users began trending hashtags like #July5Disaster and #TatsukiProphecy. Some even claimed that she predicated the disaster in much of this year’s timeline, only weeks off.
Researchers from Japan quickly rejected any prediction claims. Tokyo University professor Naoya announced the history of the claim and also described them, “unscientific” and “random guesses”.
Even the Japanese government was urging the public not to believe in prediction claims. They made it clear that using modern science, predicting earthquakes was impossible.
Even when evidence was presented, many people were upset and took the prophecy very seriously. Tourism bookings to Japan dropped by 83% in early July. Some airlines even recognised their customers wanted to cancel flights to Tokyo for free.
A tsunami of 1.3 meters seen at Iwate Port in Northern Japan. Evacuees were running for the safe areas, as they recalled the deadly tsunami that plagued Japan back in 2011. Nuclear plants in Japan were safe and stable after the earthquake, and cancellation, delay or suspension of transport services like ferries and flights also occurred.

Conclusion
Even though the prediction was matching the recent events, science does not support the prediction. Ryo Tatsuki’s manga continues to raise questions and interest on the global stage.
