India Champions Refuse to Play Pakistan in WCL Semifinal Over Political Tensions

India Declines to Play Pakistan in WCL Semifinal

The India Champions have refused to face Pakistan in the semifinals of the World Championship of Legends (WCL). The decision comes in response to the recent terror attack in Pahalgam and India’s strong stance against sporting ties with Pakistan. The semifinal was scheduled for Thursday at Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham.

Players Stand United After Pahalgam Attack

The Indian team, featuring legends like Shikhar Dhawan, Irfan Pathan, Harbhajan Singh, Yuvraj Singh, and Suresh Raina, stood united in their decision. They had earlier made their position clear, expressing unwillingness to play against Pakistan after the attack and the Indian military’s ‘Operation Sindoor’.

This is not the first time the Indian side has refused to play Pakistan during this tournament. In the group stage, several players had also declined to participate in a match against Pakistan under similar circumstances.

Sponsors Back India’s Move not play in WCL Semifinals

EaseMyTrip, one of the tournament’s major sponsors, supported the decision. Co-founder Nishant Pitti took to social media to share the company’s stand. He stated that cricket and terrorism cannot be treated separately and emphasized that national interest must come first.

He wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “We applaud Team India for their performance. But the semifinal is not just another game. Terror and cricket cannot go hand in hand.” Pitti further added that EaseMyTrip would not support any match that aims to normalize ties with a country that supports terrorism.

India Stormed into Semis with Dominant Win

India Champions reached the semifinals after a convincing win over the West Indies Champions. They chased down the target in just 13.2 overs in their final group game on Tuesday. Despite their strong run in the tournament, the Indian team has chosen to uphold the country’s larger values. With this move, the players and stakeholders have sent a clear message some things are bigger than sport.
