Nimisha Priya Case: In short

Kerala-born nurse Nimisha Priya was convicted in Yemen in 2018 for the murder and dismemberment of her local business partner, Talal Abdo Mahdi, in an attempt to reclaim her passport and documents. Initially sentenced to death, her appeal was rejected by Yemen’s Supreme Judicial Council in 2023. Under Sharia law, her only possible route to freedom lies in securing a pardon from Mahdi’s family through the payment of diyah (blood money), negotiators have pursued this path with support from India’s Ministry of External Affairs.
