Bollywood actor Bhumi Pednekar has launched a premium beverage brand called Backbay, co-founded with her sister Samiksha Pednekar. The brand’s debut product is natural mineral water priced at Rs150 for 500ml and Rs200 for 750ml. The sisters claim they’ve spent the last two years building the company, which now has its own manufacturing plant in Himachal Pradesh.
In interviews, Bhumi shared that she and her sister fully own and operate the plant. They built a workforce primarily led by women to reflect the values they want their brand to represent. Bhumi emphasized their strong focus on sustainability. She explained that they use Gable Top Paper packaging and added a bio-cap, which they specifically chose for its eco-friendly design. According to Bhumi, they are the first in India to adopt this type of packaging. The facility produces up to 45,000 boxes each day. They pack the water directly at the source without any human contact.
Despite the high pricing, Bhumi insists the product is meant to be accessible. She compared it to market alternatives, saying, “Plastic water goes up to Rs 90, and glass bottles can cost Rs 600. We priced ours in the middle.”
Bhumi added that Indian consumers already spend on energy drinks, so paying more for quality water shouldn’t be surprising. “This is Himalayan mineral water, rich in naturally occurring electrolytes,” she said.

The sisters have big plans. Samiksha revealed that Backbay will soon launch flavored sparkling water in lychee, peach, and lime. Bhumi added, “We want to reach 100 crore in four years and be in schools, offices, theaters, and homes.”
Backbay is completely self-funded. Bhumi said she invested her own money starting from her first paycheck of 7,000 at age 17 to build the brand.
