With speculation growing around Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s ODI future, the BCCI has finally spoken but without naming names. The board has introduced a new mandate: players eyeing the 2027 World Cup must commit to domestic cricket.
This subtle yet firm message signals that even the biggest names won’t be exempt from proving match fitness and form. It is a clear sign that performance and commitment will outweigh reputation when it comes to selection.
According to reports, the BCCI expects all one-day hopefuls to participate in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, India’s premier domestic 50-over competition. This mirrors the earlier requirement for red-ball players to feature in the Ranji Trophy before being considered for Test selection.
The new rule sends a strong message: no shortcuts, even for legends. For Kohli and Rohit, both in their mid-to-late 30s, this added demand could be a tipping point.
India’s ODI series against Bangladesh in August has been cancelled, making the three-match series against Australia from October 19–25 the next assignment. If the duo opts out of domestic cricket, this could be their final appearance in the 50-over format.
Sources suggest the board won’t block their participation in the Australia tour, but further selection will depend on domestic performance and availability.

Behind closed doors, the selectors are already eyeing the next generation. India’s white-ball talent pool is brimming with young stars eager to step up. Building a stable core for the 2027 World Cup is the priority and that means tough calls must be made.
Kohli and Rohit have led Indian cricket for over a decade. But in the new era of accountability and depth, their legacy alone may not be enough to secure a spot.
