Roger Federer is making a highly anticipated return to the Shanghai Masters after an eight-year break. The 20-time Grand Slam champion confirmed he will participate in the “Roger & Friends” celebrity doubles event on October 10 at Qizhong Stadium. This marks his first appearance at the tournament since winning his second Shanghai singles title in 2017.
The “Roger & Friends” event promises an exciting mix of tennis and entertainment. Federer will team up with actor Wu Lei, martial artist and actor Donnie Yen, and former world No. 3 doubles player Zheng Jie. Zheng Jie is a two-time Grand Slam doubles champion. Fans will have a rare chance to see Federer back on court. He will play alongside stars from sports and entertainment
In a promotional video, Federer shared his excitement. He said, “Hello, this is Roger, and I am really happy to be returning to Qizhong Stadium in Shanghai for the Rolex Shanghai Masters.” He added, “Shanghai has always been a special place for me. The fans are great, the memories unforgettable, and the love for the game strong.”
Although retired from professional singles play, Federer has remained visible in the tennis world. He was recently seen at Wimbledon, watching Novak Djokovic’s match and receiving a warm ovation from the crowd. He also joined Djokovic and Andy Murray at Roland Garros for a heartfelt tribute to Rafael Nadal, celebrating one of tennis’s greatest rivalries and friendships.
