Dengue Alert: Tips to Stay Safe During the Monsoon

Dengue Alert:
As the monsoon season brings relief from the summer heat, it also brings an increased risk of mosquito-borne diseases like dengue, malaria, and chikungunya. These diseases thrive in the humid weather, and stagnant water becomes the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes. Dengue, in particular, remains a major concern due to its severe symptoms and potential complications.

Dengue Alert:

According to Dr. Vikas Vashisth, an internal medicine specialist at Silverstreak Multispeciality Hospital, the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which is the primary carrier of dengue, breeds in clean, stagnant water. This mosquito is most active in the early morning and late afternoon, making the monsoon the ideal time for dengue to spread.

Here are six important tips to help prevent dengue and stay safe during the monsoon:

1. Eliminate Stagnant Water: Even small amounts of standing water can serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Regularly clean and empty containers like buckets, coolers, flowerpots, and old tyres. Ensure that water tanks and pet bowls are covered and gutters are cleared to prevent water from collecting.

2. Use Mosquito Repellents: Apply mosquito repellents that contain DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus. These are most effective during peak mosquito hours. For children, choose safe options like mosquito patches or roll-ons when they play outdoors.

Opt for long-sleeved shirts and full-length trousers to reduce skin exposure. Light-colored clothing is recommended as mosquitoes are more attracted to dark shades.

4. Install Mosquito Screens and Nets: Fit windows and doors with screens to prevent mosquitoes from entering. In areas with high mosquito activity, use mosquito nets, especially while sleeping.

5. Recognize Early Symptoms: Early detection of dengue is crucial for timely treatment. Watch for signs such as high fever, severe headaches, muscle pain, pain behind the eyes, rash, and nausea. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.

6. Stay Alert and Participate in Community Efforts: Stay updated on local dengue alerts and follow official health advisories. Join community clean-up drives to reduce mosquito breeding sites in your area.

By taking these simple precautions, you can help protect yourself and your loved ones from the dangers of dengue and other mosquito-borne diseases this monsoon season.
