Kannappa On OTT: Is Mythological Genre at Risk?

Kannappa On OTT: Kannappa was the long-awaited mythological film with Manchu Vishnu in the lead role, and it entered OTT with huge expectations. Acerbic was a passion project; that was the visual grandeur and devotional narrative of the film that demanded promotion. It sought to impart the magic of mythological cinema in the digital world. Unfortunately, its warm-to-cool reception made one wonder if the mythological genre is losing interest on OTT.

Kannappa On OTT:

There was some buzz before the release of the film, though Kannappa found itself unable to sustain it. Viewer engagement with its OTT release has been very low, comments on social media, and various reviews point at a lack of emotional connect, outdated storytelling, and visual effects overkill, where for a genre that is expected to connect emotionally with the audience through devotion and cultural relevance, Kannappa appears to have failed.

One of the challenges for it lies in changing tastes. The OTT viewer prefers fast-paced, character-driven content grounded in realism or with a fresh take, especially for the younger generation. Unless given some innovative approach, the-age old mythological Genre.

All About Kannappa:

The film Kannappa, featuring Manchu Vishnu, started off with a bang but slowed down after the first week. The film completed its theatre run with an estimated net collection of ₹32.9 crore in India (about ₹38.9 crore gross) and a worldwide gross of nearly ₹43.9 crore. The movie got mixed reviews, but it turned out to be Vishnu’s biggest opening till date, though not a clear commercial blockbuster.
