Here’s a full look at how the IRCTC sets prices when you cancel, based on the type of seat and when you cancel.
If you call off a seat that was set, what you pay depends on how long until your train leaves:
Over 48 hours before it leaves:
₹240 for AC First Class/Executive Class
₹200 for AC 2 Tier/First Class
₹180 for AC 3 Tier/AC Chair Car/AC 3 Economy
₹120 for Sleeper Class
₹60 for Second Class
From 48 to 12 hours before it leaves:
25% of the ticket price (but not less than the sums above)
From 12 to 4 hours before it leaves:
50% of the ticket price (but not less than the sums above)
Less than 4 hours before it leaves:
No cash back for seats set in stone.
2. Stopping RAC or Waitlisted Tickets
Before they set who goes:
Full cash back minus a small fee of ₹60 (plus GST if it applies).
Once they decide:
No cash back for e-tickets still on the waitlist. Yet, for counter tickets, you can give in a TDR (Ticket Deposit Receipt) at the station.
3. Tatkal Ticket Cancellation
Set Tatkal tickets: No cash back at all.
Tatkal tickets still on the waitlist: These get axed and money back on their own after list is set.
