TV’s Kindest Judge Passes Away

Judge Caprio, the beloved Rhode Island judge who brought warmth and humanity to the courtroom, has died at age 88. He passed away peacefully after a long battle with pancreatic cancer, his family confirmed Wednesday. Known worldwide for his hit show Caught in Providence, Caprio gained viral fame for his heartfelt rulings and genuine empathy. His courtroom clips, often featuring humorous and touching exchanges, earned more than a billion views across social media.

A Lifetime of Compassion

Caprio served as a municipal judge in Providence for nearly 40 years, retiring in 2023. His courtroom became a rare symbol of kindness in the justice system. “The phrase ‘with liberty and justice for all’ should mean something,” he once said. “But many Americans face court alone, without help.” He routinely dismissed tickets for those in hardship, often calling children to help judge their parents in heartwarming scenes that blended justice with laughter.

  • A 96-year-old man explaining he was driving to take his disabled son to the doctor – Caprio dismissed the fine and praised his devotion.
  • A smiling college student whose charm earned her a free pass on a parking ticket.
  • In one memorable episode, a 6-year-old girl judged her mother’s ticket and negotiated breakfast for her siblings as part of the deal.
Tributes Pour In

Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee called Caprio “a treasure,” ordering flags at half-staff in his honor. “He showed what’s possible when justice is met with humanity,” McKee said. Caprio’s family remembered him as a loving husband, father, and grandfather. “His legacy lives on in every act of kindness he inspired,” they said.
