Asia Cup 2025: India vs Pakistan On! Government Issues Final Call on Participation

India vs Pakistan Is On in But With Conditions

The much-anticipated India vs Pakistan clash in the Asia Cup 2025 is officially happening. On Thursday, the Sports Ministry announced its decision, confirming India’s participation in the multilateral tournament scheduled to take place in the UAE from September 9. The Group A face-off is locked for September 14 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

This comes as part of a newly introduced government policy on international sports engagements, especially involving Pakistan. While bilateral series remain suspended, multilateral events like the Asia Cup will continue to feature both nations.

India vs Pakistan : No Bilateral Games, Multilateral Matches Allowed

The ministry’s statement made the distinction clear: “Indian teams will not play bilateral matches in Pakistan, nor will Pakistani teams be allowed to play in India.” However, events held under the umbrella of multilateral tournaments, like those governed by the ACC, ICC, or Olympics, are allowed.

This means Suryakumar Yadav and his team are free to play in Dubai but only because the event is not a bilateral one. The directive takes immediate effect, according to official sources.

Past Tensions and Future Clarity

Tensions had flared since the Pahalgam terror attack in April, with uncertainty hanging over India’s participation. Rumors even hinted at a possible withdrawal, which could’ve jeopardized the entire Asia Cup. However, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) calmed speculation in July with a full tournament schedule.

Similar diplomatic hurdles had impacted the 2023 Asia Cup, leading to a hybrid hosting model where India’s matches were shifted out of Pakistan. The ICC has now set a precedent whenever Pakistan hosts, India will play at a neutral venue, and vice versa. This agreement is in place until 2027.

What About Other Sports?

When asked if this policy applies to other sports, a ministry source said, “Each case will be examined individually.” The official added, “We can’t put our athletes at risk. Our responsibility is to protect them, no matter the event.”
