IRCTC Introduces Stricter Luggage Limits:
Indian Railways has introduced new luggage rules that passengers must follow when traveling by train. These changes aim to make travel more comfortable and safer for all passengers by regulating the amount of luggage one can carry.
AC First Class: 70 kg
AC Second Class: 50 kg
AC Third Class/Chair Car: 40 kg
Sleeper Class: 40 kg
General Class: 35 kg
If your luggage exceeds the permitted weight, you can book extra luggage at the parcel office at the station. The additional charges will be 1.5 times the normal luggage rate. For example, if you’re traveling in Sleeper Class and your luggage is 80 kg, you will need to book the excess weight at the parcel office for an additional fee of about ₹110.
The rules also state that the luggage’s size will be checked along with the weight. If your luggage is larger than the specified size, you will be asked to pay extra charges.
For better convenience, the railways are setting up luggage scanners and electronic weighing machines at major stations. These systems are currently being piloted in the North Central Railway zone, with a planned investment of ₹960 crore.
Passengers must ensure they follow these new guidelines to avoid penalties. If caught with more luggage than allowed without prior booking, a fine up to six times the extra luggage fee can be imposed.
These changes reflect the railways’ efforts to improve the travel experience and manage luggage more efficiently at stations.
