Poonch LoC Clash: Fresh tensions erupted along the Line of Control (LoC) following Indian Army detection of the suspicious movement along the gloves of the border in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district. As per defense sources, heavy firing commenced late on Sunday night when troops suspected armed militants were attempting to infiltrate into Indian territory. Officials report that surveillance equipment picked unusual activity near forward posts in the Mendhar sector of Poonch. Interception suggested suspected militants were moving in from Pakistan-occupied territory under cover of darkness. Indian soldiers responded by firing with heavy calibers to thwart a possible infiltration bid. Security forces in adjacent sectors were also put on high alert to block any alternate routes.
Although firing caused panic in nearby villages, no civilian casualties were reported. The army clarified the firing was precautionary, made to deter the suspected infiltrators. Search operations were under way across forests and ridgelines on Monday morning to ensure that no militant group managed to slip through the security perimeter.
Crossings in Poonch are not isolated incidents. Security experts highlight that infiltration attempts tend to thrive around winter because passes on the mountain still remain open, making crossings far less difficult along the LoC. Intelligence has repeatedly warned that terrorist groups across the border wish to take advantage of lapses in the security grid. This incident seems to fall under the same category for a yet-again reoccurring pattern.
Heavy gunfire has been echoed by local residents for several hours during the night. Many villagers living close to the LoC kept themselves inside, fearing return fire. So far, however, authorities have assured that extra strength had been summoned to protect civilian settlements. District officials, further, remain in touch with village leaders to follow these developments and offer help should it be required.
The firing in Poonch comes at a time when India and Pakistan have been maintaining a fragile understanding of ceasefire since 2021. Such incidents, however, illustrate the speed at which tensions can flare up. According to analysts. These types of clashes test the ceasefire understanding and have the potential to impact larger regional security overarching considerations. For the Indian Army, thwarting infiltration has become an uppermost priority, posed by cross-border militancy that places peace in Jammu and Kashmir at stake.

Search operations are apparently still continuing, and the army does not rule the possibility of some other attempts being made over the coming weeks. As winter nears, the security forces are likely to revamp the surveillance at the infiltration-prone stretches of the LoC. The situation in Poonch is reported to be tense but currently under control, with the army determined to prevent any security breach.
