Onam Festival Explained: Story, Meaning and Importance

Onam Festival Explained: Onam is one of the most auspicious festivals of Kerala among Malayalis. This festival is celebrated with great joy and complete devotion across the state. This festival is completely rooted in the legend of King Mahabali, who is a very generous and beloved Asura King.

Who is King Mahabali?
According to mythology, King Mahabali was adored by his people because he never denied them anything they wished for. His reign was marked by happiness, prosperity, and equality. Seeing this, the Devas grew envious and sought the intervention of Lord Vishnu. Vishnu took the form of Vamana, a dwarf Brahmin, and approached King Mahabali. Vamana requested just three steps of land. Though advised against it by his ministers, Mahabali’s generosity led him to agree. Vamana then revealed his true form, growing in size. His first step covered the Earth, and his second covered the universe. As there was no space left, King Mahabali offered his own head for the third step.

With this act of King Mahabali, lord Vishnu was impressed by his kindness and his devotion to his people. Looking at his love and kindness, lord Vishnu told Mahabali to ask for any wish. The king Mahabali asked to return once a year to visit his beloved people. This annual visit is celebrated as Onam, symbolizing prosperity, unity, and cultural pride.
