Many people book train tickets in advance for their journey. But sometimes, due to sudden reasons, we may not be able to travel. In such cases, one common doubt is – can we give our train ticket to someone else? What happens if another person uses our ticket? Let us understand the rules.

IRCTC Rules:
According to Indian Railways, a ticket is valid only for the person whose name and details are mentioned on it. If someone else uses the same ticket, the railway authorities treat that passenger as if they are traveling without a valid ticket. This is a punishable offense under the Railways Act, 1989. The passenger may have to pay a fine or, in some cases, even face legal action depending on the travel class and distance.

However, the railway department allows ticket transfers in special situations. If you want to give your ticket to a family member such as your parents, brother, sister, son, daughter, husband, or wife, you must apply at the railway reservation counter at least 24 hours before the train departure. You need to submit the original ticket, an identity card, and proof of relationship. Only after official approval, the ticket can be transferred.

If you try to give your ticket to a friend or any other person without following this rule, the ticket becomes invalid. The traveling person will be fined as if they were traveling without a ticket.

The Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE) checks every passenger’s ticket during the journey. If they find a mismatch between the ticket name and the passenger, they will issue a penalty. In some cases, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) may also take further action.

So, it is always better not to give your train ticket to others. If you cannot travel, you can cancel the ticket or reschedule the journey. This way, you will avoid fines, legal trouble, and unnecessary problems. Following railway rules ensures a safe and stress-free travel experience.
