The FBI has revealed new details about the suspected motive behind the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Authorities say 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, who allegedly shot Kirk, told his family the day before the attack that he disliked Kirk because he “spread hate.”

Charlie Kirk, co-founder of Turning Point USA and a close ally of former U.S. President Donald Trump, was fatally shot while speaking at Utah Valley University (UVU). The 31-year-old activist was addressing a college crowd under a tent when he was struck in the neck by a rifle shot fired from a distant rooftop. Investigators later recovered the weapon, wrapped in a towel, along the suspect’s escape route.

Authorities identified the shooter as Robinson, who allegedly fled the scene by blending in with the student population. FBI surveillance images and rooftop footage showed a figure of college age escaping immediately after the attack. A massive manhunt followed, with more than 7,000 public tips helping lead to Robinson’s arrest.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox revealed that Robinson had discussed Kirk at a recent family dinner, describing him as “full of hate and spreading hate.” While the motive is still under investigation, officials believe these remarks offer insight into Robinson’s mindset prior to the attack.

The investigation has also drawn attention to a video circulating online, reportedly showing Robinson reading a letter announcing a $32,000 scholarship to Utah State University. The footage has not been independently verified but has become part of the inquiry.

Kirk’s killing has reignited debate over political violence in the United States, where leaders from both parties have faced increasing threats. Former President Trump called Kirk a “great guy from top to bottom” and ordered flags lowered to half-staff nationwide.

Rising to prominence as a teenager, Kirk built Turning Point USA into a major conservative youth organization with a strong campus presence. While he inspired deep loyalty among supporters, his views on race and culture made him a polarizing figure, particularly among younger voters.

The FBI continues to investigate Robinson’s planning, potential accomplices, and the role family members played in helping authorities track him down.
