Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a second autopsy for late singer Zubeen Garg. The decision follows rising public concern and allegations of foul play. Authorities will conduct the autopsy as part of the ongoing investigation. They aim to determine the exact cause of his sudden death in Singapore.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, CM Sarma confirmed that the second post-mortem will take place on Tuesday morning at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). A team from AIIMS Guwahati will also be present during the examination to ensure full transparency. Garg’s body will arrive at GMCH at 7:30 AM, and the procedure is expected to take one to two hours. The family has given their consent for the fresh autopsy.
Zubeen Garg, 52, suffered a seizure while swimming at Lazarus Island in Singapore last week. Initial reports claimed he died in a scuba diving accident. However, Singapore authorities issued a death certificate stating the cause as drowning. Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma clarified that the death certificate is not the same as the post-mortem report. The Assam government is working to obtain the post-mortem report from Singapore.
Preparations are underway for the singer’s funeral in his native village, Kamarkuchi NC. The ceremony is scheduled for 8 AM Tuesday. In a tribute to his legacy, the Assam government has acquired 10 bighas of land to build a memorial at the site, as per the wishes of Garg’s family.

Thousands of fans gathered at Guwahati’s Sarusajai Stadium on Sunday to pay their last respects as officials placed Zubeen Garg’s body in a glass casket for public viewing. His wife, Garima, thanked the crowd for their love and support. She said, “Had Zubeen been alive, he would have been overwhelmed by this show of love.”
