Karur Stampede: Will Vijay Be Arrested Like Allu Arjun?

Karur Stampede Vijay Arrest: The infamous stampede at the campaign of TVK president Vijay in Karur has shaken Tamil Nadu politics. The stampede during this campaign, which saw lakhs of supporters. Became a death trap as the crowd went berserk to reach the campaign vehicle. The total death toll of the stampede includes 38 persons, out of whom 10 are said to be children and 17 women, while many others are reported to be in a critical state. With already restricted capacity, the hospitals in Karur are overflowing. Patients are being transferred from adjoining districts such as Trichy.

Comparison Between Vijay and Allu Arjun

The question of whether Vijay will face repercussions is gaining much traction. People quote the case of Telugu star Allu Arjun, arrested in December 2024 after the death of a woman in the stampede during the first show of Pushpa 2: The Rule in Hyderabad. Arjun was charged under Sections 105 and 118(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), negligence leading to death and failure to manage a public gathering.

Explaining Sections 105 and 118(1)

Section 105 of the BNS is almost a mirror image of Section 304 of the IPC. Which deals with culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The section kicks in where negligence, such as the failure to control a crowd, is responsible for the loss of life. The punishment can range anywhere between five years and life imprisonment and a fine.

Section 118(1) of the BNS is somewhat like IPC Section 324. In that it describes harm carried out recklessly or by dangerous means. A conviction under this provision carries a penalty of up to three years’ imprisonment or a fine of ₹20,000. Both these provisions are cognizable, as such the police are empowered to arrest the offender without a warrant.

Will Vijay Face Arrest?

Legal experts suggest that it is the responsibility of the organizers, security persons, and celebrities to ensure safety at such huge events. Though it is too early to say whether appropriate legal action will be taken. Calls for accountability seem to grow louder.
