Simple ways to check gold purity:
1. BIS hallmark:
It is very important to check the BIS hallmark. For this, there are very simple steps to identify. First is see the BIS logo and check the purity number, which is written in carats or fineness like 22K or 916 for 91.6 % purity. There will be the jeweler’s brand mark on it, which can be trusted for a moment.
2. BIS Care App:
It is advised to use the BIS care app for verifying gold and the jewelry seller. You can download the BIS care app and tap Verify Jeweller/Assaying & Hallmarking Centre. Following that, you can enter the 6-digit HUID number. In this app, they show the purity of the gold, the Jewelry seller’s name, and the Hallmark info.
3. Magnet Test:
There are other steps where gold can be easily detected if it is fake. In this process, if you use a magnet near the jewelry, it should not get attracted. As gold is non-magnetic, if it sticks, then that jewelry has a mix of other metals.
4. Water Test:
In the process, you can test the gold by putting it in a small bowl of water. If the gold sinks, it is very pure, but if it’s fake or impure gold, it floats on the water. The 3 and 4 processes don’t give 100% accurate information, but they can give you an idea of how to check it in the XRF test.
