Tamil Nadu to Introduce Bill on Banning Hindi Movies, Songs

Ban Hindi Movies: According to the media sources, the Tamil Nadu government has planned to introduce a bill to ban Hindi movies, songs, and also hoardings that are in Hindi. It is said that this bill is going to be introduced today(Wednesday, October 15th, 2025). According to the media sources, this bill is going to aim to outlaw Hindi songs, movies, and hoarding all over the state. The significant development follows the continuing linguistic dispute between the Center and the Tamil Nadu government regarding the use of the three-language formula in schools.

The action is probably a reaction to what the DMK has been calling the imposition of Hindi over regional languages, and it comes ahead of the 2026 Assembly election.

According to the media sources, TKS Elangovan, a senior party leader, said,  “We will not violate the Constitution in any way. We’re going to follow it. “We oppose the imposition of Hindi,”. The Tamil letter “ரூ” was used as the state budget logo by the Tamil Nadu government earlier this year in place of the official Indian rupee symbol “₹.”

Stalin has stated that if Hindi were not “imposed” on Tamil Nadu, the DMK would not oppose it. He had claimed that it was disrespectful to Tamils to force them to speak the language. The action will be a significant step in the ongoing linguistic dispute between the Center and the Tamil Nadu government about the use of the three-language formula in schools.

Tamil Nadu’s opposition to the Center’s National Education Policy (NEP) sparked the dispute in early 2025. The central administration, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party, is accused of forcing Hindi onto the state. Additionally, it claimed that after the MK Stalin-led administration declined to execute the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in Tamil Nadu, the Center withheld Rs 2,150 crore intended for the state.

Three Language Policy:

As long as two of the three languages are indigenous to India, the three-language strategy should be based on the preferences of the states, regions, and students. Hindi is not required to be included in the three-language formula. The Tamil Nadu government, however, claims that it is an attempt to impose Hindi through the back door.

Since independence, there have been continuous discussions on language policy in education. A three-language formula was first put up by the Radhakrishnan Commission in 1948–1949 in an effort to foster interprovincial communication. The National Education Policy of 1968 subsequently accepted this, and it has been maintained in successive programs, such as NEP 2020.
