School Holiday Due to Diwali 2025:
Diwali, one of India’s biggest festivals, will be celebrated in 2025 on October 20 (Monday). Many schools across the country have already declared this day as the main holiday for Deepavali. However, there is still some confusion about whether October 21, the day after Diwali (Govardhan Puja), will also be a school holiday.
Since school boards and traditions differ across states, the holiday schedules are not the same everywhere. The CBSE and ICSE schools usually follow a uniform national calendar, declaring a holiday on the main Diwali day. But state boards often announce extra holidays based on regional customs and other local festivals celebrated during the same period.
During the Diwali season, several festivals are observed in a row — Dhanteras, Choti Diwali (Naraka Chaturdashi), Diwali, Govardhan Puja, and Bhai Dooj. This means that students usually get a break of about a week around this time.
Rajasthan: October 13 to 23 (12 days holiday)
Bihar: October 18 to 29 (includes Chhath Puja)
Karnataka: October 8 to 18, with extra holidays on October 20 and 22
Uttar Pradesh: October 20 to 23
Delhi-NCR: October 19 to 23, with a chance of extension till October 28 due to Chhath Puja
West Bengal: October 20 to 23 (includes Kali Puja, Diwali, and Bhai Dooj)
Andhra Pradesh: October 20 will be the main holiday; some schools may also close on October 18
In short, October 20 is the official Diwali holiday across India, while October 21 may be an optional holiday depending on the state or school. Parents and students should check with their respective schools for confirmation, as private and government institutions may follow different schedules.
