Bank Holiday Today:
According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) holiday calendar, several banks across India will remain closed today, Tuesday, October 21, 2025, on the occasion of Diwali Amavasya, Deepawali, and Govardhan Pooja. The closure applies only to specific regions, as bank holidays vary from state to state depending on local festivals and traditions.
On this day, banks will not operate in cities like Belapur, Bhopal, Gangtok, Guwahati, Imphal, Jammu, Mumbai, Nagpur, Raipur, and Srinagar. The decision to close banks is part of the RBI’s regional holiday schedule, which includes national, state, and religious observances throughout the year.
Diwali, also known as Deepawali or the Festival of Lights, is one of India’s most important festivals. It symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. According to Hindu mythology, Diwali marks the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after defeating the demon king Ravana. People celebrate this occasion by lighting lamps, bursting crackers, and sharing sweets.
Govardhan Pooja is celebrated a day after Diwali and is dedicated to Lord Krishna. It commemorates the lifting of the Govardhan Hill by Lord Krishna to protect the people of Vrindavan from heavy rain sent by Lord Indra. On this day, devotees worship Govardhan Hill and prepare traditional food offerings.
While many banks will be closed on October 21 for Diwali and Govardhan Pooja, essential online banking facilities remain open across the country, ensuring that financial transactions continue smoothly.
