Thamma Day 1 Box Office: After a lot of build-up, the supernatural thriller Thamma has hit the big screen as the newest chapter in the burgeoning supernatural universe of Maddock Films. Directed by Aditya Sarpotdar, who has two note-worthy leads in Rashmika Mandanna and Ayushmann Khurrana, the movie also stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui in a key role. Despite the polarizing mixed reviews from critics and audiences, Thamma opened very well at the box office with a strong ₹24 crores on its first day in India according to reports.
The film’s teaser seems to suggest a story that is scary, and a little sad, starting with the phrase: “This universe needed a love story; unfortunately, it was a bloody one.” In the background song, sung by Arijit Singh, Thamma plunges to the heart of supernatural romance focused on vampires. It is, therefore, Maddock Films’ first attempt to blend the classic love story with the gothic horror mold, extending the tonal palette of an already established supernatural franchise.
Maddock Films initially launched its supernatural universe with Stree (2018) under Amar Kaushik that astonished everyone with its phenomenal box office collections. The second part, Stree 2, released on August 15, 2024, became one of Bollywood’s highest-grossing movies of the year, grossing over ₹700 crore all over the world, after its production cost was around ₹60 crore.
Furthermore, after Stree, this universe was continued with Bhediya (2022) and Munjiya (2024), both of which seemed to have quite favorable reviews.
With the release of Thamma, Maddock continues to cement its supernatural franchise. All movies in the universe to this point have cost a total of around ₹300 crore, while the box office revenues have exceeded an astonishing ₹1,000 crore. Basing initial ticket sales, we might just have 2 walk in the new film Thamma today as the latest to wear the crown, solidifying Maddock Films kings in the supernatural cinematic universe in India.
