Cyclone Montha Impact: These States on Alert from Tomorrow as Storm Nears

Cyclone Montha Impact: As Cyclone Montha is gearing towards the eastern coast of India. The IMD has forecasted landfall by October 28. The system developing over the Bay of Bengal would continue affecting areas in Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana until October 30 with heavy rainfall, strong winds, and turbulent seas.


Cyclone Montha Impact:

Andhra Pradesh: The Landfall and After-Cyclone Montha Situation (October 28–30)

Andhra Pradesh is likely to be adversely affected as Montha will land on the coast near Kakinada on the morning of October 28. Wind speeds in coastal districts will be around 120 km/h, together with very heavy rainfall. And storm surges of around 1.5 meters at Kakinada, Machilipatnam, Vizag, and Konaseema. The state has evacuated more than 40,000 people from low-lying areas and ordered schools to be closed until October 30.


Odisha: Heavy Rains Between October 28 and 29

The outer bands of cyclone Montha will start impacting parts of southern Odisha late October 28 and continue through October 29. Districts like Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri are under a red warning for extremely heavy rain and flash floods. Fishermen have been barred from going to the sea until October 30, due to rough conditions which may be there even after the cyclone’s weakening.

Tamil Nadu: Brush with the Northern Districts (October 27–28)

In northern coastal districts of Tamil Nadu including Chennai, Tiruvallur, and Kanchipuram. Strong winds and moderate to heavy rain would be experienced from October 27 to 28. Tamil Nadu will escape a direct landfall; however, intermittent showers and probable power outages are forecast.

Telangana and Beyond (October 29–30)

The other states will see rainfall extended by the cyclone circulation into Telangana on October 29 and 30. Especially Khammam, Warangal, and Nizamabad; some scattered showers could also happen in West Bengal and Jharkhand.
