UIDAI New Guidelines:
Aadhaar card has become one of the most important identity documents in India, linked to almost every major service such as bank accounts, income tax, and government schemes. However, many people are still confused about its legal value when it comes to proving citizenship or date of birth. To clear this confusion, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has released a new clarification.

UIDAI New Guidelines:

According to a recent circular issued by the Postal Department, Aadhaar can be used only as proof of identity of the cardholder. It cannot be considered valid proof for citizenship, residence, or date of birth. The government has also directed all post offices to display this clarification publicly to make sure citizens are aware of it.

For proof of citizenship, documents such as an Indian passport, voter ID card, birth certificate, PAN card, ration card, or official citizenship certificate can be used.

For proof of residence, acceptable documents include voter ID card, electricity or water bill, ration card, bank passbook, rent agreement, property documents, or driving license.

To prove date of birth, people can use their birth certificate, PAN card, school marks sheet, driving license, passport, or matriculation certificate.

Despite this limitation, Aadhaar remains essential for various services in India. It is required for linking PAN cards, opening or verifying bank accounts, filing income tax returns, applying for passports, and obtaining benefits like LPG subsidy, pension schemes, ration cards, and Ayushman Bharat health insurance.

The UIDAI’s clarification aims to stop the misuse of Aadhaar for purposes it was not meant for. The authority wants citizens to understand that Aadhaar confirms identity, not nationality. Hence, people should keep their other government documents updated for proof of citizenship, residence, or birth date.

This official statement helps avoid future confusion and ensures people use the right documents for the right purposes.
