Actor-turned-filmmaker Rahul Ravindran has finally responded to the speculation regarding his much-talked-about directorial project The Girlfriend and the blockbuster film Arjun Reddy produced by Sandeep Reddy Vanga. In allaying speculation, Rahul clarified that the story of The Girlfriend was conceived well before Arjun Reddy’s screening. He has stated that the two films capture the essence of modern relationships in their multiplicity but that the soul of his story is entirely different.
“Thematically, it’s about emotional dependence and personal growth. It is not about toxic love or self-destruction,” said Rahul recently when asked whether his film had anything to do with Arjun Reddy. “I actually thought of The Girlfriend long before Arjun Reddy was even announced.”

Focus on Emotional Depth, Not Controversy

Rahul went further and explained that what he wanted to tell in his story is how people go through love, heartbreak, and healing. Unlike Arjun Reddy, which was often cast as a glorification of aggression and obsession, The Girlfriend is said to unravel emotional vulnerability from a much balanced perspective.
He added, “This isn’t a story about rage or revenge; it’s about reflection and rediscovery. The comparisons are understandable because both films have emotional intensity, but the core message is very different.”

“People mention Arjun Reddy only because they happen to have seen the film.The Girlfriend, however, is standalone,” he concludes.
