Dulquer Salmaan’s Kaantha: The Madras High Court has issued notices to actor-producer Dulquer Salmaan and the filmmakers of Kaantha following a family plea related to the this subject, that reference to the family of the renowned Tamil actor-musician M.K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar is made in a defamatory context.
The petition states the filmmakers did not seek family approval or even notify the family the plot of the film they alleged and refers to Bhagavathar. According to the family, the content tarnishes the name of the late artist, a symbol in South Indian film and music.
The court has served notices to the defendants, which encompass Dulquer Salmaan and his production house, for the next hearing on Nov 18. The original release date of the film was November 14.
Director of the much praised Netflix documentary series ‘The Hunt for Veerappan’, Silva Selvaraj introduces Kaantha. Wayfarer Films owned by Dulquer Salmaan and Spirit Media headed by actor Rana Daggubati co-produced the movie. The producers are Dulquer Salmaan, Jom Varghese, Rana Daggubati, and Prasad Potluri.
Against the backdrop of 1950s Madras, Kaantha investigates the issues of ego, revenge, and feeling between two characters. One of the main parts in Dulquer Salmaan is Samuthirakani, who shows as a filmmaker called Ayya. While Bhagyashree Borse stars as the female lead, Kumari, Rana Daggubati portrays a police officer.
Other important performers in the film are Ravindra Vijay, Bhagavathi Perumal, and Nizhalgal Ravi. Kaantha’s debut non-Malayalam work for Wayfarer Films will be available in Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, and Hindi.
