That’s exactly what happened to M.K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar, popularly known as MKT, a man who went from being the biggest star in Tamil cinema to facing downfall, disgrace, and even prison time.

10 Blockbusters in 14 Films:
Most of today’s generation might not know MKT, but during the 1930s and 1940s, he was the superstar of Tamil cinema. Out of the 14 films he acted in, 10 became blockbuster hits. His film Haridas reportedly ran for over 100 weeks in theatres, a record at that time.

Born in 1910 in a poor family, Mayavaram Krishnasamy Thyagaraja Bhagavathar started as a Carnatic singer before entering films. Between 1934 and 1959, he became a household name. He was so successful that he owned a Mercedes-Benz and dined on gold plates, luxuries unheard of in those days.

The Murder Case That Changed Everything:
But fame brought arrogance. MKT’s clashes with a well-known director led to his downfall. Soon after, he was accused of the murder of a journalist, which destroyed his career. He spent nearly two years in jail before being acquitted. When he tried to make a comeback, the industry had moved on. Despite several attempts, he never regained his stardom. On November 1, 1959, MKT passed away at the age of 49.

Dulquer Salmaan’s upcoming film Kaantha, produced by Rana Daggubati, is set to release on November 14. The trailer suggests strong similarities to MKT’s life story, from his rise to fame to his tragic downfall. Dulquer reportedly plays a character inspired by MKT, while Samuthirakani portrays the director who causes his decline. Although the makers haven’t officially confirmed it as an MKT biopic, fans believe Kaantha is a cinematic retelling of one of the most dramatic lives in Indian film history.
