Shane Watson: Ahead of the IPL 2026 season, the three-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions Kolkata Knight Riders made a significant announcement when they recruited former Australian all-rounder Shane Watson as their new assistant coach. Watson, who returns to an IPL coaching position after three years, brings a wealth of experience to the team after working in a similar capacity under Ricky Ponting with the Delhi Capitals.
Watson, one of Australia’s greatest players ever, will collaborate closely with KKR head coach Abhishek Nayar. In addition, Dwayne Bravo, a former all-rounder for the West Indies, will remain the team’s mentor ahead of the upcoming campaign. Kolkata had a poor season in 2025, finishing ninth in the rankings. The team will look to improve in the next season in an attempt to win the crown again.
KKR Franchise CEO Response to Shane Watson’s Appointment:
Venky Mysore, the CEO of the Kolkata Knight Riders, took center stage and discussed Watson’s appointment shortly after it was made.
“We are ecstatic to have Shane Watson join the KKR family. His expertise as a top-tier player and coach will greatly enhance our team’s preparation and culture. In an official statement, Mysore said, “We look forward to his contributions both on and off the field. His understanding of the T20 format is world-class.”
