Shubman Gill Retires: During the morning session of the second day of play in Kolkata, Indian captain Shubman Gill retired due to what appeared to be a potential neck sprain. Simon Harmer dismissed Washington Sundar shortly after the drinks break, and Gill came to bat.

The right-handed No. 4 hitter, who defended the first ball he encountered before attempting a slog sweep on the subsequent one, was bowled by the right-arm spinner from round the stumps. He made a good connection and scored his first four from it, but he seemed uncomfortable immediately after. Gill was clutching the back of his neck and appeared to be unable to move his head freely when the physiotherapist arrived. Following a brief examination, Gill retired from the field due to injury, and Rishabh Pant took his place in the middle.

What Actually Happened with Shubman Gill?
Gill looked clearly uncomfortable as he got up from finishing the sweep. Clearly fighting with stiffness, he took off his helmet and put his palm on the left side of his neck. After a moment of motionlessness, he gestured to the physiotherapist. The Indian management decided against taking any chances with their skipper following a quick on-field evaluation. Gill started the leisurely trip back to the pavilion as a substitute batter was called.

The 25-year-old faced just three deliveries before retiring hurt, and the event happened just minutes after he reached the crease. Concern was immediately raised in the Indian dressing room as he appeared more rigid when the physiotherapist treated him. Gill went directly inside for additional treatment while medical personnel could be seen coming and going.
