Schools Closed Today:
Schools in Chennai and several nearby districts have been given a holiday on November 17 because of continuous heavy rains. The weather department issued a strong rain alert for many parts of the state, and several areas in Chennai recorded overnight downpours, leading to waterlogging in low-lying regions. Due to this, district collectors announced that all government, private, and aided schools will remain closed today.
Authorities also advised parents and students to avoid unnecessary travel, as many main roads in Chennai are flooded. Traffic movement has slowed down in several areas, and emergency teams are working to clear the water.
According to the weather department, Chennai is under an orange alert, which means heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected. The rains are linked to a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, which is likely to continue for the next 24 hours. This system is moving slowly towards the Tamil Nadu coast and may bring more rain in the coming hours.
Districts Where Schools Are Closed Today (Nov 17, 2025)
Chennai – Closed due to heavy rain and waterlogging
Chengalpattu – Closed for safety reasons
Tiruvallur – Closed due to waterlogging alerts
Kancheepuram – Likely to be closed (local authorities to confirm)
Southern Tamil Nadu districts – Schools mostly open; final call depends on local weather
The IMD has also issued orange alerts for several districts like Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, and Tiruvarur. These regions may receive heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places. Districts such as Villuppuram, Cuddalore, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, and Kanyakumari are under a yellow alert, meaning moderate rainfall is expected.
The Tamil Nadu government has instructed local administrations to take necessary safety measures. A low-pressure area near the Sri Lanka coast and the southwest Bay of Bengal is causing this weather situation. Fishermen have been strictly advised not to enter the Gulf of Mannar and the Kanniyakumari sea because strong winds may reach speeds up to 55 kmph.
Authorities are monitoring the situation closely through the state emergency operations centre.
